Source: BMWBlog.com. The E39 BMW 540i is almost a baby-M5 in a lot of ways. It still packs a V8 under the hood, only it uses a 4.4 liter V8, rather than the 4.9 liter V8 of the E39 M5. The 540i’s 4.4 liter unit makes 282 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. While that’s a far cry from the 400 hp of the E39 M5, it’s still enough to be fun.

The E39 was originally offered with a choice of straight six engines (520i, 523i and 528i) or a new V8 (540i). A V8-powered 535i then came on stream in 1996. At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1998, the flagship 540i lost its position at the top of the E39 range when the next highly anticipated iteration of the M5 was launched.

The B10 V8 is the first Alpina car based on the E39 5-series generation. It was introduced in March 1997 and in production until 2003. When it was introduced it was considerably cheaper than the E34 B10 4.6 it replaced. It was around 17000 D-mark cheaper than the E39 M5.
